VLCMediaPlayer - Convert to MP3 file format:
About:
This page explains how to convert a audio file to MP3 format using VLC Media Player.
What you need:
- VLC Media Player (any version after 3.0)
- Your
.oggfile (it can be audio or video; we’ll only extract the sound)
How to:
- Start VLC Media Player
- At the top left: Click Media and Choose Convert / Save
- In the new window: Click Add, Find your
.oggfile, Click Open and Then click the Convert / Save button at the bottom - Now you’ll see a new “Convert” window. Under Settings, make sure “Convert” is selected. Look at the dropdown called Profile. It might say something like “Audio – MP3.”
- Check what codec it’s actually using. Click the wrench icon (⚙️) right next to the profile dropdown. (This opens the profile editor.)
- A new window appears called “Profile edition.” Click the Audio codec tab at the top. (Ignore “Encapsulation” or “Video codec” — we only need audio.)
- Now make sure these boxes and settings are correct:
✅ Check the box labeled Audio
✅ In the Codec dropdown, select mp3
✅ Bitrate: 192 kb/s (you can choose 128 if you want a smaller file)
✅ Channels: 2 (stereo)
✅ Sample rate: 44100 Hz
When that’s done, click Save.
- Now click Start at the bottom. VLC will begin converting. You’ll see the progress bar move along the bottom of the player. It can take a few seconds or a few minutes, depending on the file size.
Confirm:
- Go to the folder you saved it in. The file should now be called something like
MyConvertedSong.mp3. - Opening it in VLC and going to Tools → Codec Information
It should say:Codec: MPEG Audio layer 3 (mp3) - Try playing it on your phone. It should now show up as a normal MP3 track.
And you are done! 😄
